The University Museum has over 2,500 objects in its fine and decorative arts collections, including significant work in sculpture and photography, with an emphasis on 20th century works by regional, national and international artists, including work by SIUC art faculty and graduate students.
Touch of Nature is a unique center for outdoor, environmental, and experiential learning located eight miles southeast of Carbondale in the rolling hills of southern Illinois. A 900-acre lake, Giant City State Park, and Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, as well as the Shawnee National Forest border its 3,100 acres.
Founded in 1997 by Paul Simon, a former two-term U.S. Senator from Illinois and one-time candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute differentiates itself from similar organizations by working directly with elected officials and others to fashion and implement change in public policy. The Institute focuses its efforts on fostering ethical conduct in government, opportunity and fair treatment for citizens in America and throughout the world, and promoting responsible citizenship for all Americans--but particularly for young Americans.
As a member of the highly competitive Missouri Valley Conference, Southern Illinois University sponsors 18 intercollegiate sports. Each season, the Salukis build on a tradition of academic and athletic excellence. Since 2001, Southern Illinois University has won 18 conference championships and appeared in 24 NCAA tournaments or regionals.
The SIU Student Center is committed to providing excellence in programs, services, and facilities while serving students and the community in a safe and inclusive environment. As the central gathering place, the Student Center fosters creativity, social development, and enhances the educational experience.
SIUC Recreation Sports Services offers access to more than 200 exercise stations, including 100 Cardio Pieces, the newly remodeled Saluki Strength Room, numerous classes (including strength, step, yoga, boxing, martial arts, and Tai Chi), personal and small group training, special events and competitions, and assessment and evaluation services at the Student Recreation Center.
Navigating to, from and around Carbondale is relatively easy. Located approximately two hours from St. Louis and Lambert International Airport, SIU students can take advantage of shuttle service to and from the campus. Amtrak offers twice daily train service to Chicago, Memphis, and New Orleans. Cape Air offers regional air service with five daily flights to St. Louis-Lambert International Airport. The Saluki Express bus is free for students (with a student id) for trips around campus as well as the University Mall, Illinois Avenue, and Murdale Shopping Center.
