Dr. Arthur Grayson Distinguished Lecture Series

The Dr. Arthur Grayson Distinguished Lecture Series began in 1996 and is named for a member of the Garwin family. The Garwin family and the Garwin Family Foundation are longtime supporters of health law programs and activities at the SIU School of Law.

Dr. Arthur Grayson was a general surgeon in Los Angeles until his death in 1990. He was a member of many surgical and philanthropic societies.

"Brain Dead and Pregnant: The legal and ethical considerations and impact of the Marlise Munoz case"

A discussion of the legal and ethical issues involved in the brain death case of Marlise Munoz and the judge's ultimate decision to compel JPS Hospital to remove her body from life sustaining measures. A further analysis will be made of the aftermath of the Munoz case, including the effect of the Judge's ruling on other cases and attempts by states to use the Munoz case to redefine their laws.

Jessica Janicek is a family law and appellate attorney in Texas who frequently handles complex legal issues. As co-lead counsel in the 2014 case of Munoz v. John Peter Smith Hospital, a case which garnered international interest, Ms. Janicek argued the winning interpretation of a statute regarding end of life issues. She has garnered many accolades, including Living Magazine's “Best Attorney in Northeast Tarrant County” for 2013, 2013 Legal Leader on the Rise” by Texas Lawyer, “Top Attorney” in Fort Worth Magazine for 2012-2013, and was recently named a Texas Rising Star by Texas Monthly for 2014. Although an avid litigator for her clients in the courtroom, Jessica Janicek also has an accomplished appellate practice, arguing and winning cases in front of several courts of appeal and the Texas Supreme Court. Ms. Janicek lives in Fort Worth, Texas with her husband and four rescue dogs.
