Legal Globalization: Cuba

Students in Cuba

Professor Cindy Buys with students at the National Union of Jurists (the equivalent of the American Bar Association in the U.S.)

This course focused on the history of U.S.-Cuban relations, the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba, and its effect on business opportunities in Cuba.  Students spent the first several weeks of the semester learning about the history of Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations, Cuba’s government and legal system, its culture, economy and business environment, and the impact of the U.S. embargo on doing business in Cuba.

Students spent spring break in Cuba where they met with Cuban government officials, students and faculty from the University of Havana, and lawyers, judges and businesspersons in Cuba.  Students also participated in cultural activities such as walking tours through historic old Havana and a visit to the Fort la Cabaña.

Read the students' blog about their experiences.

After returning to the U.S., students prepared presentations about their experiences that they shared with the University community.
