There are few things that take place at a law school that are more exciting than a moot court competition! Over the last two weekends, the Advanced Appellate Advocacy students, under the direction of Professor Cheryl Anderson, Director of Appellate Advocacy Programs, participated in the 2012 Intramural Moot Court Competition. This competition gives students experience arguing before an appellate level court. Nineteen students participated over both weekends.

Competitors argued before panels of lawyers, judges, and law professors, who generously volunteered their time to serve as judges for the competition. Among the judges who participated are the the Honorable J. Phil Gilbert, United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, the Honorable Kenneth Deihl, Circuit Judge, Seventh Judicial Circuit (Macoupin County), the Honorable Ericka Sanders, Associate Circuit Judge, Fourth Judicial Circuit (Marion County), the Honorable Stephen Sawyer, Chief Judge, Second Judicial Circuit, (Jefferson County), the Honorable Bruce Stewart, Appellate Court of Illinois, Fifth District, the Honorable Eric Pistorius, Circuit Judge, Seventh Judicial Circuit (Jersey County), the Honorable Michael McHaney, Associate Circuit Judge, Fourth Judicial Circuit (Marion County), and the Honorable Melissa Chapman, Appellate Court of Illinois, Fifth District.

The competition culminated in a final round that was judged by the Honorable Lloyd A. Karmeier, Supreme Court of Illinois, the Honorable Justice M. Carol Pope, Appellate Court of Illinois, Fourth District, and Professor Steve Macias, Assistant Professor at SIU Law.  This year's champion team is Thomas Drysdale and Abbey Fritz, with Margaret Malloy and Susannah Price finishing as runners up.  Semifinalists were Nicholas Childress and Andrew Mossman, and Jessica Sarff and Kerrianne Waters.  The award for Best Brief went to Thomas and Abbey, with the Second Place Brief award going to Jessica and Kerrianne.  Thomas was named Best Oralist, Jessica Sarff placed second, and Margaret Malloy placed third.

Congratulations to these students and to all who competed. Thank you to all who volunteered to make this event a huge success and a great experience for all the competitors.
