Sunnyville native bikes across the country before taking on internship, residency

Temperatures of 110 degrees, excitable dogs and the Rocky Mountains were just a few of the challenges Sunnyvale native Lt. Mike Parenteau encountered on his 3,700-mile bicycle trek across the nation this summer. 

Dubbed "Mike's Magnificent Bicycle Journey," the ambitious endeavor was a spur of the moment decision by Parenteau, 29, who just graduated from a joint medicine and law program at Southern Illinois University.

As a new physician in the Navy, he will be a general surgery intern for a year at the Naval Medical Center San Diego before kicking off his residency, which will take up to 10 years. Before taking that on, he figured he would go on an adventure.
