CARBONDALE -- A Saluki gets recognized as one of the National Jurist Law Students of the Year, an honor given to 20 students across the country.
36-year-old Victor Feraru received the award for the work he's done in the community and his leadership at SIUC. The award is given to law students who speak up for the voiceless and serve those in need.
"I think that life has a way of just coming together," Feraru said.
And Feraru has quite the background.
"I was conceived in a mental institution and it sort of went downhill from there," Feraru said.
Feraru was raised in more than 40 foster homes and group homes as a child. He got into some legal trouble as a teenager and was homeless as an adult.
"I tried to kill myself when I was younger and I think that a lot of [motivation] was just hope, so I hoped for family and love," Feraru said.
And he eventually got it.
"I've had so many mentors that have helped build me into the person that I am and prior to having family, those mentors were my family," Feraru said.
