Continuing Legal Education

SIU School of Law is an accredited provider of continuing legal education for Illinois attorneys. Attorneys licensed in other states will need to check their own states’ rules related to what programs will qualify.

In conjunction with the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism, the SIU School of Law administers a Lawyer-to-Lawyer Mentoring Program through which attorneys may earn 6.0 PMCLE hours. Read more here.

Asylum & Refugee Law Training

Friday, October 17, 2014

1:00 - 4:15 pm

3.0 free MCLE Hours (IL)

There are a number of persons in the region who have credible claims to asylum due to persecution in their home countries, but who lack legal representation in preparing their application. This half-day program will introduce lawyers and law students to the basics of asylum and refugee law in preparation for representing clients seeking asylum. Topics will include who qualifies as a refugee or asylee, the five statutory bases for asylum, current issues in asylum and refugee law, the process for seeking asylum both affirmatively and defensively, and alternatives to asylum.

This CLE training is being offered free of charge by the SIU School of Law. In return, we ask that those attorneys who receive this training consider taking on a pro bono asylum client. We will work with attorneys to match them with interested law students to help with research and document preparation. The program faculty are also willing to act as expert consultants as needed.
