Adjunct Professor of Law
Tom is the Managing Attorney for Allen, Kopet and Associates, PLLC, a multi-state insurance defense firm. He oversees workers' compensation defense claims out of Allen-Kopet's Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, and southern Illinois offices. Tom is licensed to practice law in Illinois, Missouri, and Kentucky. Prior to joining Allen-Kopet, Tom was the supervising partner for Rusin, Maciorowski and Friedman's southern Illinois office from 2002 through mid-2013.
Tom earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Management from the National-Louis University in Florida and graduated with high honors in 1989. Tom went on to attend the Southern Illinois School of Law where he graduated with his Juris Doctor in 1993. While in law school, he was selected as a finalist in the first-year Moot Court competition, served as a certified mediator through the school’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Clinic, worked as an articles editor for the SIU Law Journal, and was third-year co-captain of the Products Liability Moot Court team.
Tom was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1993 and to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois in 1994. His publications include "Health Care Workers and AIDS: HIV Transmission in the Health Care Environment," which was published in volume 13 of the Journal of Legal Medicine, in 1992. Tom has served as an editor on several scholarly articles analyzing constitutional issues, several of which have appeared in nationally recognized law journals.
Before joining Rusin Maciorowski and Friedman, Ltd., Tom served as the Assistant Attorney General and Office Director for the southern Illinois Office of the Illinois Attorney General in Carbondale, Illinois. He is an experienced trial attorney in matters of workers' compensation, insurance defense litigation, subrogation, and family law.
An accomplished public speaker and educator, Tom has appeared on numerous local radio and television programs including the "Help is Available" television program for his legal expertise. He hosted a regional 30-minute "Public Report" television program for two years. Tom has conducted numerous presentations and training seminars for insurance companies, employers, and various civic and fraternal organizations over the past two decades.
