Student Profile - Jones II
James A. Jones II (Class of 2022)
James is a 2L student who does it all. He is President of Black Law Student Association, an article editor for SIU’s Law Journal, and a participant in the SIU Law Intramural Mock Trial Competition. He has also organized and moderated a town hall of criminal justice reform and mass incarceration as well as a National Employment Law Project “Ban the Box” conference series. In addition to all of that, he maintains his top ten class ranking while raising two children in the midst of a pandemic.
James was drawn to SIU Law because of the small class size that promotes strong relationships with faculty. Specifically, he calls Professor Upchurch “brilliance personified” and thinks “her teaching style should be bottled and mass produced.” He praises Professors Jones and Simon for their ability to share their vast knowledge in a way that’s fun, engaging, and manageable while offering unwavering support of students. Lastly, he appreciates the challenges from Professor Behan that he sees preparing him to pass the bar examination.
After graduation and passing the bar, James hopes to use his Master of Arts degree in Urban and Regional Planning along with his legal expertise to work in a commercial real estate practice group. He completed a 2020 summer internship with Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP in their St. Louis office.
