Student Profile - Newman
Justine Newman (JD/MD Class of 2026)
Justine Newman has only been in Carbondale for a few months, but this joint program JD/MD 1L student has already made an impression with CALI Awards in Contracts 1, Torts 1, Legal Research, and Legal Writing. Originally from the Philadelphia area, she completed her undergraduate program in health sciences with a minor in criminal justice at Northeastern University in Boston. One of the things she appreciates about SIU is that she is now surrounded by students with varying interests and backgrounds who approach problems and discussions differently.
Justine’s impressive resume demonstrates how she prioritizes problem-solving through experiences that range from a researcher whose findings were presented at the 2020 American Academy of Forensic Sciences meeting to an intern with the Chester County, PA, Coroner’s Office where she organized burial for twenty-one unclaimed veterans at Washington Crossing National Cemetery. It comes as no surprise that Justine plans to continue a life of research and public service after her 2026 graduation.
A 7th grade career day presentation by a local coroner helped Justine begin her journey to “give voice to people who no longer have a voice of their own.” Justine’s MD focus is forensic pathology, and she hopes to practice medicine as a medical examiner. Her ultimate goal with her JD is to reform death investigation in the US. Justine Newman is a Saluki Lawyer who is ready to make a difference in the world.
