As part of our commitment to copyright law and the performing arts, the SIU Intellectual Property Society hosted its first annual “Bands Battle for the Bar” fundraising event at Tres Hombres on November 5th, 2015. The event showcased five bands, featuring talented law students Taylor Sprehe, Chris Konya, Alan Mabee, Bill Albee, Aaron O' Brien, Dakota Cummins, Gil Richardson, and John Skrabacz. The genres of music ranged from acoustic and rock to alternative and folk music. The event was emceed by the hilarious 1L Peter Su, who entertained the crowd between sets.
Professors Tom Britton and Jennifer Camero served as judges for the event. The winners, Chris Konya and his father, Paul Konya, otherwise known as, “The Konyas,” took home a $250 cash prize. The event raised over $800, including the cash prize, and was well-attended and well-received by law students and the community.
IP Society President Jacy Carpenter and Vice President Julie Wolf coordinated the event, along with the help of officers Kathleen Smith, Kiersten Von Klekner-Alt, Thomas Sanner, and Daniel Fanning. Special thanks to the sound guy Peter Julian AKA Bongo Pablo, Peter Su, Carlton Fay, and our incredible judges. Huge thanks to Tres Hombres for allowing us to rock out at their venue.
“The turn out absolutely exceeded my expectations! The bar was completely packed from wall to wall. It was great to see the Carbondale community and SIU Law come out and support our fellow talented classmates. It was nothing but good vibes, unity, and great music! Everyone came together and make this an incredible event that will definitely become a yearly tradition for our organization.” -Jacy Carpenter, IP Society President
With enough interest, next year the IP Society plans to host an “Alumni Reunion Battle of the Bands” for law school alumni and current law students.
