Health Law & Policy Program

The purpose of the SIU Health Law and Policy Program is to enhance legal education in the rapidly evolving field of health law, with a focus on research dissemination, student leadership, scholarship, and interdisciplinary community service.

The Program supports an extensive array of opportunities for students in health law education, including:

  • Innovative curricula taught by experienced faculty, such as Health Policy Law, Public Health Law, Disability Law, Mental Health Law, Bioethics, Medical Malpractice, Workers Compensation, Insurance Law, Rural Health Law, Scientific and Medical Evidence, and numerous legal clinic offerings
  • Specialization in Health Law with a demonstrated concentration of health law courses
  • Dual Degrees with the SIU Schools of Medicine (JD/MD), Business (JD/MBA), and Social Work (JD/MSW)
  • National Health Law Moot Court Competition sponsored by SIU School of Law annually
  • Student leadership organizations, such as Law and Medicine Society and Law Students for Reproductive Justice
  • Interdisciplinary Professionalism Day, a joint interactive ethics program for all first-year law and medicine students, and students from other departments at SIU
  • Cross-appointed faculty between the SIU School of Law, SIU School of Medicine Department of Medical Humanities, and SIU Department of Public Health and Recreation and affiliations with the SIU Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development and the SIU Department of Anthropology in forensic science
  • Externships in health law and policy with established partners locally and across the nation, such as Land of Lincoln Legal Aid's nationally award-winning Medical-Legal Partnership and government policy-makers in the Illinois capital and across the nation
  • Summer Health Policy Institute, with national speakers, supported by First Health Medical Provider Class (represented by SL Chapman LLC), Southern Illinois Healthcare, and Sandberg Phoenix & Von Gontard, PC
  • John and Marsha Ryan Bioethicist-in-Residence, supported by the Garwin Family Foundation
  • Globalization student travel courses with a focus on health law (e.g., Cuba, Germany, Australia)
