From Interim Dean Buys
On June 3, 2020, Interim Dean Buys sent the following message to SIU Law students:
I am deeply saddened by the death of George Floyd and my heart breaks for all those who have been harmed due to the continuing injustice and inequality that exists in our criminal justice system and in our society. At the SIU School of Law, we are committed to the promise of equal protection of the law for all. We condemn racism in all its forms. As the University stated in its recent message, “Now more than ever we must come together to oppose racism through education and constructive action.” As lawyers-in-training, you are being uniquely equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a positive difference in the legal system. The School of Law’s Mission Statement reflects our commitment to serving the public good, increasing access to justice, and providing a diverse educational environment where students are encouraged to examine their values and learn to interact effectively with many different persons in our legal system and global society. As we watch the current protests unfold, I encourage you to consider your present and future role in bringing about equality and justice for all in our legal system.
