National Health Law Moot Court Competition
The extent of a physician’s free speech rights will be debated by some of the nation’s leading law students this weekend at the National Health Law Moot Court Competition at Southern Illinois University School of Law. The final round judges include two SIU Carbondale alumni, G. Patrick Murphy, a judge for the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Illinois, and Julio Fuentes, a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Murphy also earned his law degree from the SIU School of Law.

Trial Team Wins First Place in McGeorge, SIU, GGU Trial Challenge
SIU's four-person team of Randi Burggraff (3L), Harrison Cohen (3L), Matthew Hess (3L), and Deanah McClendon (2L) won first place overall in the competition. The team won both of its trials (plaintiffs in the morning and defense in the afternoon) and were also awarded every single judge and juror ballot in both trials.

On September 24, Associate Professor Chris Behan gave a testimony before a hearing conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense Response Systems to Adult Sexual Assault Crimes Panel in Washington, DC. SIU Law offers new, unique course on Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
Assistant Professor Mike Koehler, founder and editor of the website FCPA Professor (, and Southern Illinois University School of Law are pleased to announce that Professor Koehler will be offering a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (“FCPA”) course at SIU during the Fall 2013 semester. The course is believed to be one of the first specific FCPA law school classes offered that is exclusively devoted to the FCPA, FCPA enforcement, and FCPA compliance.

Assistant Professor Lucian Dervan has been invited to join a Research Coordination Network regarding plea bargaining funded by the National Science Foundation. The research network, which is being convened to spur more research on guilty pleas, includes twenty-nine members from across the United States representing the fields of law, criminology, sociology, economics, psychology, and political science.

Douglas W. Lind, law library director and professor of law at the SIU School of Law, is the recipient of a national award that recognizes a significant contribution to legal biographical literature. Lind received the 2013 Joseph L. Andrews Biographical Award for his sourcebook, “Lincoln’s Suspension of Habeas Corpus: the Pamphlet Literature and Congressional Debate,” from the American Association of Law Libraries.
