SIU symposium focuses on 2nd Amendment

CARBONDALE -- What is the future of the Second Amendment?

That question was at the heart of a discussion Thursday at the SIU School of Law.

The school hosted four panel discussions, all focused on gun rights.

It comes 10 years after a the Supreme Court ruled on District of Columbia v. Heller, a case that determined people can have a gun for reasons other than being in a militia, including self defense at home.

George Mocsary, assistant law professor at SIU, said that case didn't settle the 2nd Amendment debate.

"Since then, a number of courts have spoken on the topic," Mocsary said. "Some folks are satisfied with what they've said, others are not, and we're here to have a discussion about those cases and what the future should look like."

The law school regularly hosts symposiums on legal issues. Mocsary said the next one is May 18 and it will focus on the opioid epidemic. WSIL-TV 3 Southern Illinois
