Carbondale Attorney Wins State Bar Association Awards for Public Service

Carbondale attorney Paul Matalonis received the Illinois State Bar Association’s highest award for public service, the Joseph Bartylak Award, on July 18, 2018. Matalonis has worked for Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation for 34 years after volunteering for the organization as a law student.

The award is presented annually to a legal service attorney who “provides extraordinary, compassionate and successful legal advocacy, significantly advances access to quality legal representation, and serves as an example through a record of exceptional advocacy, leadership and dedication for the importance of providing civil legal services to the state’s most vulnerable citizens.”

Judge Patton

Atkinson native first female judge in Stark County

A Henry County native has made history by becoming the first woman to preside in a Stark County courthouse.

Suzanne Patton said she was in grade school in Atkinson when she began thinking about pursuing a legal career. The daughter of Greg and Sally Patton, the 1992 Geneseo High School graduate became an associate judge in Peoria County in 2016.

Currently assigned to domestic relations court in Peoria County, Patton said serving in Stark County was a little like coming home. She substituted for Circuit Judge Circuit Judge Steve A. Kouri in Stark County.

Before Patton was assigned to that bench, the presiding judges there all had been men.

Patton said she had had no problems as a female judge.

Ms. Calderaro attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri where she
graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice.
She then continued her education at Webster University and graduated with a Masters in
Legal Studies in 2011. Ariana then attended Southern Illinois University School of Law.
She graduated in 2014 with her Juris Doctorate Degree from Southern Illinois University
School of Law before joining the Law Group, Ltd.

Culley, Feist, Kuppart & Jordan is pleased to announce that our former associate, Kylee J. Jordan, has joined the firm in partnership. Jordan is a Southern Illinois University School of Law Class of 2010 alumni. While enrolled at SIU she volunteered at the Veterans’ Legal Assistance Program which provided pro bono legal services to veterans in Southern Illinois. Jordan also participated in Appellate Advocacy Division of the Moot Court Board where she competed nationally in moot court competitions.

Following graduation Jordan worked for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office as an Assistant Attorney General in the Workers’ Compensation Bureau from 2011 to 2017. While there she gained extensive experience working on all aspects of workers’ compensation cases. In January 2017, she entered private practice and began working for Roman P. Kuppart, a Southern Illinois University School of Law Class of 2002 alumni, at Culley, Feist, Kuppart, & Taylor. Coming from several generations of coal miner’s, including her mother, Jordan eagerly fights for the rights and benefits entitled to injured workers. It is because of her success and her commitment to our clients that the firm is thrilled to announce this transition to partnership.

John P. Cunningham

Class of '86

John P. Cunningham (SIU Law School, J.D., 1986), Principal at Brown & James, P.C., was named  Madison County’s winningest civil defense attorney in 2014 by The Madison-St. Clair County Record, the Metro East's legal journal.

Last year, Mr. Cunningham won three cases in which the plaintiff had sought more than $50,000 in damages. He had back-to-back wins in February 2014.

Mr. Cunningham specializes in the areas of first-party insurance claims and tort law, including arson and fraud litigation, premises liability, product liability and automobile litigation. He is also a 2014 Illinois “Super Lawyer” in the category of insurance coverage.

Murphy is licensed to practice law in Illinois and Missouri. He is admitted to practice in the United States Court of Appeals 7th Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Central and Southern Districts of Illinois. He received his J.D. in 2004 from Southern Illinois University School of Law.

Murphy is a member of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, Defense Research Institute, Sangamon County Bar Association, and Lincoln-Douglas Inn of Court.
