Josh Bradley
Joshua Bradley is an Assistant Professor of Law at Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School. He joined Simmons as an adjunct professor in fall 2025 and moved to a full-time faculty appointment in fall 2026. His teaching includes Intellectual Property Law and Contract Law. During his first year, he also coached two copyright moot court teams, both of which advanced to the final rounds of the competition.
Professor Bradley’s research focuses on patent law, with particular attention to patent eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101. He pursued his Ph.D. at the Faculty of Laws, University College London (UCL), in England, where his research was supported by a scholarship from the Institute of Brand and Innovation Law (IBIL). His thesis, Principles, Processes, and Programs: The Long Arc of Patent Eligibility Leading to Alice, examines the historical and institutional development of American patent eligibility and its recurring search for balance between patentable applications and unpatentable principles. The thesis has been submitted, with his doctoral defense scheduled for November 2026.
While completing his doctoral research, Professor Bradley also served as a Graduate Lecturer at UCL. He taught LL.M. Patent Law, supervised and assessed postgraduate research, advised students, and mentored incoming doctoral researchers. He also delivered guest lectures at the universities of Kent and Warwick and helped coach UCL’s Oxford International Intellectual Property Moot team, reaching the competition’s final rounds on several occasions. His other academic service included helping organize doctoral conferences and related programs, serving as Co-Chief Editor of the UCL Journal of Law and Jurisprudence, and helping improve the university’s intellectual property research holdings.
Before entering academia, Professor Bradley spent nearly four years as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, examining patent applications involving business methods, software, and other computer-implemented inventions for compliance with the patent laws and rules. His experience applying patent law within the USPTO continues to inform his research and teaching. Earlier, he worked in technology transfer and licensing at Missouri University of Science and Technology, evaluating university inventions for patentability and commercial potential.
Professor Bradley earned an LL.M. in Intellectual Property, cum laude, through the joint program of the University of Turin and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Italy and Switzerland. At Saint Louis University, he earned a J.D. with concentrations in Intellectual Property Law and International & Comparative Law and was named the law school’s Jaime Ramirez Student of the Year. He also earned an M.B.A. with an emphasis in entrepreneurship. He holds a B.S. in Engineering Management, magna cum laude, from Missouri S&T. Professor Bradley also completed Harvard Law School’s PatentX and CopyrightX certificate programs and is admitted to the Missouri Bar.
A native of the St. Louis area, Josh lives with his wife, Dany, and their dogs, Loki and Luna.
