Thomas Reichert
Thomas A. Reichert is an Assistant Professor of Law at Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School. His research uses empirical and computational methods to study how courts apply multifactor legal tests, with a focus on trademark likelihood of confusion. His scholarship has been published in the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal and the University of Illinois Law Review Online, and is forthcoming in the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies and IDEA. He teaches Business Organizations and Property and has also taught Contracts. Before joining the law faculty, he practiced patent and trademark law at Bookoff McAndrews PLLC and Kutak Rock LLP. He earned his B.S., M.Eng., MBA, and J.D. from SIU.
Thomas A. Reichert is an Assistant Professor of Law at Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School. His principal projects study trademark likelihood of confusion at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and in the federal courts, including what those decisions mean for legal doctrine, litigation strategy, and the division of decision-making between judges and juries. His current research also addresses copyright fair use and patent remedies.
Professor Reichert's scholarship has been published in the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal and the University of Illinois Law Review Online. Additional articles are forthcoming in the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies and IDEA. He is also the creator of The Fair Use Database, a free public research database of federal judicial opinions addressing copyright fair use.
At Simmons Law School, Professor Reichert teaches Business Organizations and Property. He has also taught Contracts I and Contracts II, and his teaching fields include intellectual property, commercial law, and law and technology. His courses combine close analysis of cases with practical exercises that ask students to apply legal rules to problems they may encounter in practice.
Before joining the law faculty, Professor Reichert practiced intellectual property law at Bookoff McAndrews PLLC and Kutak Rock LLP. His practice included patent prosecution, trademark counseling and enforcement, intellectual property transactions, and management of domestic and international portfolios. He is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice in Illinois and Missouri.
Professor Reichert chairs the law school's Ad Hoc AI Committee and serves as faculty advisor to the Intellectual Property Law Society. He earned a B.S. and M.Eng. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, an MBA, and a J.D. cum laude from Southern Illinois University.
