Simmons Law Summer Programs
Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School hosts two summer programs to help high school and college students learn more about law school and the legal profession.
“Crime Scene to Courtroom” Camp
In June, Simmons Law School works with the SIUE Forensics Department to hold the “Crime Scene to Courtroom” Camp at the Belleville campus. This camp brings together high school students from the Metro East area to explore the connection between law and forensic science. The program offers hands-on activities like blood spatter analysis and fingerprinting to teach students about investigative techniques used in criminal cases. The camp starts with students examining a mock crime scene, highlighting the link between science and law.
The camp later focuses on legal procedures. Alumni and faculty lead sessions on case development, evidence analysis, and trial preparation. Students practice skills like witness preparation and evidence handling.
The week ends with mock trials where students use their forensic and legal knowledge to present cases. Judges and law school staff support them as they act as attorneys and witnesses. Simmons Law School is dedicated to broadening access to legal and forensic careers.
This program is intended for high school students interested in law, criminal justice, or forensic science. This program is FREE and includes lunch.
Priority consideration given to those who apply by April 17. Applicants notified of selection decisions by May 8.
Pipeline to Practice Summer Program
In July, Simmons Law School hosts the Pipeline to Practice program for college students interested in law careers. Students participate in experiences like a mock law class and court visits, where they observe legal proceedings and meet legal professionals. This program supports Simmons Law School’s goal of making the legal profession more inclusive and accessible in areas with attorney shortages.
Faculty, staff, and alumni, along with judges, contribute to the program, which includes students from various universities.
This program is free and includes housing, meals, and transportation to events.
