Student and Family Support Services

Academic and programmatic support services are available for students with either permanent or temporary disabilities through Office for Access and Accommodations. Admitted students with a disability who seek an accommodation from the Simmons Law School should immediately contact DSS.

No otherwise qualified individual with a disability shall, by reason of such disability, be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the services or programs of the SIU Simmons Law School, or be subjected to discrimination by the SIU Simmons Law School based on a disability. The SIU Simmons Law School follows all applicable laws and regulations relating to students with disabilities including the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Applicants are not required to identify known disabilities in the application form.

Admitted students with a disability who seek an accommodation from the Simmons Law School should immediately contact Office for Access and Accommodations and inform the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Requests for accommodations must be accompanied by appropriate documentation. Such documentation should include assessments, diagnoses and specific recommendations for modification. Requests for accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Comprehensive medical care services are available to you as a student at SIU, including preventive medicine, mental health counseling, physical therapy, eye care, emergency dental care, and a full-service pharmacy, all at the SIU Student Health Center. The campus library offers a wide range of services and provides access to I-Share, the statewide automated library system, and to a comprehensive array of databases and other electronic data files.

Don’t just be afraid, do something about it. Night Safety Transit is available for students to locations on campus and to and from your home if you live within the service area; Other safety resources are also available and other personal safety services on campus can be found at the SIU Department of Public Safety.

Facilitates and coordinates a university-wide program of care and support for students in distress. Saluki Cares offers students a supportive and encouraging partnership by linking them with the appropriate resources.

Mass transit system provides students, faculty, and staff reliable transportation around our region and community.

Eating smart, getting enough rest and physical exercise, and taking other steps to manage your stress level is important while you are in law school. For assistance with stress management, nutrition, fitness, and other steps that you can take to maintain or develop a healthy lifestyle, visit the SIUC Wellness Center.

You can get “free” legal assistance with landlord-tenant issues, City of Carbondale traffic tickets and ordinance violations, credit matters, small claims, uncontested divorces without children, adoptions, and certain other matters as an SIU student at the SIU Students’ Legal Assistance Office. As a student you pay a $6 fee each semester that entitles you to these services and there is no additional charge for the legal services provided. Students are required to pay any court related costs though such as those required for filing court documents.

The Meditation Room, located on the second floor of the Simmons Law School Library – Room 270, is available to provide students with a relaxing spiritual environment. All students, from any cultural background, can use this space for prayer and quiet reflection.
